Black Forest Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  1. 1 box of chocolate cake mix (and the ingredients it calls for, usually eggs, oil, and water)
  2. 2 cans (14 oz each) of pitted sour cherries
  3. 1 cup white sugar
  4. 1/4 cup cornstarch
  5. 1/2 cup Kirsch (cherry schnapps)
  6. 3 cups heavy whipping cream
  7. 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
  8. 1 tsp vanilla extract
  9. Chocolate shavings or grated chocolate for garnish
  10. Fresh cherries (optional) for garnish

Direction

1.Prepare The Cake

  • Begin by preheating your oven to the temperature specified on your cake mix box, usually around 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix with the ingredients it requires. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into two greased and floured  9-inch round cake pans.
  • Bake as directed on the package or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then remove them and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

2.Prepare The Cherry Filling

  • While the cakes are cooling, drain the canned cherries, reserving the juice from one can.
  • In a saucepan, combine the reserved juice, cherries, sugar, and cornstarch. Over medium-high heat, bring the mixture to a boil. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until it thickens. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in the Kirsch and let the mixture cool.

3. Prepare The Whipped Cream

  • In a large mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until it starts to thicken.
  • Add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract.
  • Continue to whip until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over-whip, or you'll end up with butter.

4. Assemble The Cake

  • Using a long serrated knife, slice each cake horizontally into two equal layers, resulting in four layers.
  • Place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a third of the cherry mixture over it.
  • Top with a generous dollop of whipped cream and spread evenly.
  • Repeat these layers two more times.
  • Top with the last layer of cake and spread whipped cream over the top and sides of the entire cake.
  • Garnish the top with chocolate shavings and whole cherries, if desired.
  • You can also garnish the sides of the cake with more  chocolate shavings.

5.Chill And Serve

  • Once the cake is assembled, place it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to set.
  • Slice using a sharp knife, serve, and enjoy!
